Certain things are for certain. One of those things is that Canadian students must study Canadian history. So we haven't taken over the world or had a bloody revolution... that doesn't mean our history is any less exciting than the next country's!

At colourcanada we think that the reason why history has got a bod rap comes from a lack of understanding of what history is all about. Of course the odd date, time line and important historical figures are important, but really, the interesting part is understanding how an event helped shape and influence current situations.

For example... If the United States hadn't attacked Canada during the war of 1812, Queen Victoria might have chosen Toronto as Canada's Capital. If that were the case there would be a lot more French spoken in Toronto due to the influence of the federal government. So we can draw the conclusion that the reason there aren't bilingual signs in Toronto is the fault of James Madison... U.S. president in 1812.

While that might be a bit far fetched, it is that kind of what if and why thinking that makes history fun. So go ahead, choose a topic and start exploring our heritage.
